First of all, to understand the phrase, let us define what a temple is. The temple was a sacred meeting place for the Israelites in the Old Testament. They went there to worship, make sacrifices, and make pleas to God. “…do you not know that YOUR BODY IS THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT who is IN YOU, whom you have from God, and YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN? For you were BOUGHT WITH A PRICE; therefore GLORIFY GOD in your body and in your spirit, which ARE GOD’S.” (1 Corin. 6:19-20)
- Our Bodies are the TEMPLE (naós: a sacred structure) OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: We must understand that the Holy Spirit “lives” in us, “…I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, but you know Him, for He dwells with you and WILL BE IN YOU.” (John 14:16-17)
- We are not our own we were BOUGHT WITH A PRICE: “For you know that God PAID A RANSOM to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver…It was THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.” (1 Pet. 1:18-19)
- We need to glorify God in our BODY and SPIRIT, which ARE GOD’S: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body BE PRESERVED BLAMELESS at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thess. 5:23)
“…whether you eat or drink, or WHATEVER YOU DO, do all to the GLORY OF GOD.” (1 Corin. 10:31)
