Jesus was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum, He said, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him…Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a HARD SAYING; WHO CAN UNDERSTAND IT?” (John 6:56, 60)
Just the day before this Jesus miraculously fed 15 to 20 thousand people who ate the bread and He said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because YOU ATE of the loaves and were filled.” (John 6:26) Jesus told them they took this bread into their bodies to satisfy THEIR PHYSICAL HUNGER, now He would teach them how to satisfy THEIR SPIRITUAL HUNGER, “I am the BREAD OF LIFE. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that YOU HAVE SEEN ME AND YET DO NOT BELIEVE.” (John 6:35-36)
Then he said, “For I have come down from heaven…This is the will of the Father who sent Me…that everyone who sees the Son AND BELIEVES IN HIM may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:38-40)
So, you see when He said you must “Eat my flesh” this was a metaphor for “you must BELIEVE in me.” Eating is taking food to NOURISH THE PHYSICAL MAN, eating His flesh or “believing” in Him NOURISHES THE SPIRITUAL MAN!
From that time many of His disciples WENT BACK AND WALKED WITH HIM NO MORE. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE.” (John 6:66-68)
Do we believe that today? Almost one-quarter of practicing Christians (23%) strongly agree that “what is morally right or wrong DEPENDS ON WHAT AN INDIVIDUAL BELIEVES, NOT ON WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS!” This is why Jesus said, “…many are called, but FEW ARE CHOSEN.” (Matthew 22:14)
OH, HOW WE MUST GET THE “WORD OF GOD” IN US.
