In the Old Testament,
“Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, the SONS OF GOD saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And (because of this) the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive (dîn: contend or plead) with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” (Genesis 6:2-3) These fallen angles found a way to contaminate mankind by breeding with God’s created women like Jude said “And angels who DID NOT KEEP THEIR OWN DOMAIN, but ABANDONED their proper abode… WENT AFTER STRANGE FLESH…“ (Jude 6-7 NASB)
“Now there was a day when the SONS OF GOD came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came WITH THEM.” (Job 1:6 NASB)
“AGAIN (once more) there was a day when the SONS OF GOD came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came WITH THEM to present himself before the LORD.” (Job 2:1 NASB)
In both passages Satan and the “sons of God” appear before the Lord. It is important to notice that the “sons of God” PRESENTED THEMSELVES before God. Therefore, since the holy angels in heaven are CONTINUALLY in the presence of GOD according to Matthew 18:10, the “sons of God” are not holy angels. Instead, they are the followers of Satan. Therefore, we are to understand that the “sons of God” in Job 1:6 and 2:1 are the angels who fell with Satan. They are also called fallen angels, evil angels, spirits, or evil spirits in the Bible.
The New Testament, The phrase has different meanings in the Old compared to the New Testament.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called SONS OF GOD.” (Matthew 5:9)
Jesus was challenged by the Sadducees and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are SONS OF GOD, being sons of the resurrection.” (Luke 20:34-36)
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are SONS OF GOD.” (Romans 8:14)
“I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with THE GLORY THAT IS TO BE REVEALED TO US. For the creation waits with eager longing for the REVEALING (apokalupsis: the unveiling or uncovering) of the SONS OF GOD.” (Romans 8:18-19)
I believe the Apostle John explains this here, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God (or Sons of God)! Therefore, the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and IT HAS NOT YET BEEN REVEALED what we SHALL BE, but we know that when HE IS REVEALED, WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM, for we shall SEE HIM AS HE IS. And everyone who has this hope in Him PURIFIES HIMSELF, just as He is pure.” (1 John 3:1-3)
