“…brethren, WE ARE DEBTORS—NOT TO THE FLESH…for if you live according to the flesh YOU WILL DIE; but if by the Spirit you PUT TO DEATH the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:12-15) “Now the works of the flesh are clearly revealed, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lustfulness…” (Gal. 5:19-21)
He lists 13 others as well. Paul writing about the works of the flesh, uses the Greek word ergos for “works.” This word very often refers to a person’s occupation. This indicates that one works hard to achieve the works of the flesh (sarx: sinful impulses and carnal cravings). The expression “if it feels good, do it.” Became a theme in the 60’s and 70’s for pursuing the works of the flesh. This was a major turning point in America’s moral downfall.
Thankfully we can choose and become empowered by the Holy Spirit to be, “…LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD, to become the SONS OF GOD. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “ABBA, FATHER…if we are children, then we are heirs…HEIRS OF GOD AND JOINT–HEIRS WITH CHRIST…” (Romans 8:12-17)
