John has come in the spirit and power of Elijah. (Luke 1:17), John’s purpose, “Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight His paths.” John’s message, “Repent…for the kingdom of God is at hand…” John welcomed them with this, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come…bear fruits worthy of repentance…even now THE AX IS LAID TO THE ROOT OF THE TREES…So the people asked him, saying, “WHAT SHALL WE DO THEN?“ (Luke 3:8-10) The OLD WAY of doing things was being done away with, that tree was being cut down root and all. The law was a school master to bring us to Christ. “Thus says the LORD: “…they have despised the law of the LORD, And have not kept His commandments.” (Amos 2:4) “Of course this is because the law was written in stone, not written on their hearts.” (Rom 2:15) Remember, “…for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” (Rom. 3:20)
So, we need God’s Law but it must be written on our hearts by God’s amazing grace.
