Why did Elisha request a DOUBLE PORTION of Elijah’s spirit? Elijah’s offered Elisha a gift: “What can I do for you before I am taken from you?” Elisha answered, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me”. Elisha’s request was made because he was chosen to be the successor of Elijah and to be “doubly blessed” with power in the prophetic office.
“Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year. So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and WHEN THE MAN WAS LET DOWN AND TOUCHED THE BONES OF ELISHA, HE REVIVED AND STOOD ON HIS FEET.” (2 Kings 13:20-21) The many miracles Elisha performed confirm that he had indeed, with this miracle after his death, been granted a double portion.
Can we depend on God’s promises to us? “God is not a man, THAT HE SHOULD LIE, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. HAS HE SAID, AND WILL HE NOT DO? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Num. 23:19) “Paul, a bondservant of God in hope of eternal life WHICH GOD, WHO CANNOT LIE, PROMISED before time began…” (Titus 1:1-2)
WE’RE SO THANKFUL THAT “IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE…” (Heb. 6:18)
