- UNDER THE LAW: “When you become aware of your guilt, you must confess your sin. Then you must bring to the LORD as the penalty for your sin a female from the flock, either a sheep or a goat. This is a sin offering with which the priest will purify you from your sin, making you right with the LORD… the priest will sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering against the sides of the altar, and the rest of the blood will be drained out at the base of the altar. This is an offering for sin.” (Lev. 5:5-9)
- UNDER GRACE: “REPENT (metanoeō: to change one’s mind) and be CONVERTED, (epistrephō: return to loving and obeying God) that your sins may be BLOTTED OUT…” (Acts 3:19)
But wait, what about, “…according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the SHEDDING OF BLOOD, there is NO FORGIVENESS.” (Heb. 9:22)
- “…being in agony, Jesus prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like GREAT DROPS OF BLOOD falling down to the ground.” (Luke 22:44) Hematidrosis, is a very rare medical condition that causes you to SWEAT BLOOD from your skin when you’re not cut or injured. Jesus began shedding His blood in the garden.
- “…the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head…” (John 19:2-3) More shedding of His blood.
- “Pilate had SCOURGED (phragelloō: a whip or lash, especially for the infliction of punishment or torture) JESUS, he delivered Him to be crucified.” (Matt. 27:26) Much more shedding of His blood.
- “Surely He has borne our GRIEFS, carried our SORROWS; He was wounded for our TRANSGRESSIONS, He was bruised for our INIQUITIES; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by HIS STRIPES we are healed.” (Isa. 53:4-5) All of this is for our forgiveness…
