When God watched Adam giving names to all the animals, “…the LORD GOD SAID, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him…the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man HE MADE INTO A WOMAN, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said: “This is now BONE OF MY BONES AND FLESH OF MY FLESH; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man SHALL LEAVE his father and mother and BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THEY SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.” (Gen. 2:18,21-24)
What did Jesus say about this union? Some Pharisees came to Jesus and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” “Haven’t you read,” He replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become ONE FLESH‘? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER, let no one separate.” “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another woman commits adultery.” (Matt. 19:3-9)
The Bible strictly forbids fornication, especially in the old testament of Mosaic and Jewish customary laws. In Hebrew, the word transcribed for the sin of fornication is also in the meaning of the words for idolatry. This means that fornication is associated with the worship of heathen idols, many of which had rituals that involved forms of deviated sexual acts. Fornication can also have the spiritual sense of forsaking God and worshiping the false gods (“Libnah made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the people of Jerusalem to commit fornication…” (2 Chron. 21:10-11) “You have also whored with the Egyptians, and have multiplied your fornications to provoke Me to anger.” (Ezekiel 16:26)) Many today imply that fornication is just a sexual act like adultery, Jesus said, “…whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matt. 5:28) Does this means you can get a divorce if your husband looks at another woman? Clearly marriage is much more sacred than that!
