The fundamental theme of Jude is the danger posed by false teaching. Jude wanting to write a letter of encouragement to the early Christian church, he finds himself instead having to broadcast a warning about the dangers posed by false teachers; those who have abandoned the truth as it is laid out in God’s Word. “Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to CONTEND (epagōnizomai: to struggle) FOR THE FAITH that was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude 1:3) We can’t just present the gospel we may have to battle for it. “I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace ALLOWS US TO LIVE IMMORAL LIVES. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for THEY HAVE DENIED our only Master and Lord, JESUS CHRIST.” (Jude 1:4)
“…I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them SECURELY CHAINED IN PRISONS of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment.” (Jude 1:6) We must know where we stand as a Christian – As the old hymn says, “How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!” We must study scripture so we can distinguish between truth and falsity. Because, “…those people speak evil things against what they don’t understand. They are like wild animals. They can’t THINK FOR THEMSELVES. They do what comes naturally to them. Those are the very things THAT DESTROY THEM.” (Jude 1:10)
So, what must we do? “But you, beloved, BUILDING yourselves up on your most holy faith, PRAYING in the Holy Spirit, KEEP YOURSELVES IN THE LOVE OF GOD, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” (Jude 1:20-21)
