“LORD, what are human beings that you care for them, mere mortals that you think of them? They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow… Blessed is the people of whom this is true; BLESSED IS THE PEOPLE WHOSE GOD IS THE LORD.” (Psa. 144:3-4, 15)
The reason I chose this psalm AMY, is because it puts the nations of the world (including the USA) in their proper proportion to the Lord. GOD IS GREAT, and the nations are small. God is great and America is small. But this psalm isn’t saying that the nations of the earth are therefore unimportant to God. Rather it reminds us that God SEES AND LOVES all the nations of the earth and that any nation will be blessed that TURNS TOWARDS THE LORD. Verse 12 states, “May our sons flourish in their youth like well-nurtured plants. May our daughters be like graceful pillars, carved to beautify a palace.” (Psa. 144:12) is an invitation that is purposely open to anyone who earnestly seeks the Lord AMY. So while America has never been a nation, completely, whose God is the Lord, we have been a nation that heavily leans towards the Lord – and I believe that it should be the our desire as Christian’s to be salt and light to help move us much closer to the Lord. “You are the SALT of the earth. You are the LIGHT of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” (Matt. 5:13-14)
