Some say this light was from the sun but the sun was not created yet, “Then God made two great lights: the greater light TO RULE THE DAY (the sun), and the lesser light to rule the night…the evening and the morning were the FOURTH day.” (Gen. 1:16, 19) It was the desire of Jesus to ENLIGHTEN US as to who He really is, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For BY HIM all things were created All things were created BY HIM and FOR HIM.” (Col. 1:15-16)
We see this light expressed in the Psalms, “The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, ENLIGHTENING (H215) the eyes…” (Psalms 19:8) Jesus taught us saying, “I am the LIGHT (phōs: a heavenly light of truth and its knowledge) of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the LIGHT OF LIFE.” (John 8:12) Bright clouds, a burning bush, and a pillar of fire were signs of God’s presence for God’s people. The psalmist spoke of God as light: “The LORD is my light and my salvation” (Psalm 27:1); Isaiah the prophet promised, “The LORD shall be your light forever” (Isaiah 60:19). Light stood for the glory of God. Another Prophecy of Isaiah also spoke of the Messiah as light: “Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you” (Isaiah 60:1). And the prophet Simeon hailed the child Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles.” (Luke 2:32)
That is all so wonderfully awesome but listen to what Jesus said to us, “YOU ARE the light of the world…let your light SHINE BEFORE OTHERS, that they may SEE your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt. 5:14, 16)
