My awesome, Grandchildren, and Annika, Kaleigh, Kate, Gavin; whom I love and pray for every day: “Simon Peter said to them, “I am GOING (hupagō: to depart the ministry, take up) fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and IMMEDIATELY (before they could change their minds) got into the boat, and that night THEY CAUGHT NOTHING.” (John 21:3) Jesus had not spoken to Peter who denied Him three times, “…a servant girl came saying to Peter saying, “You were with Jesus…he DENIED it, “I do not know what you are saying…another girl saw him and said…”This fellow was with Jesus…Peter DENIED with an oath, later those came and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them…Then Peter began to curse and swear, saying, “I DO NOT KNOW THE MAN!” Immediately a rooster crowed.” (Matt. 26:69-74)
In the meantime Jesus came and built a fire and called out “did you catch anything?” they said no, Jesus said “cast your net on the other side” they did and the fish jumped into the net, 153 big ones. Jesus demonstrated to them that WITHOUT HIM, THEY COULD DO NOTHING else but what THEY WERE CALLED TO DO with Jesus. Peter and Jesus were standing next to the net FULL OF FISH and Jesus said “Simon son of John, do you AGAPAŌ me more than these?” Peter said, “you know that I PHILEŌ you.” Jesus said, feed my sheep.” Jesus asked, do you love me with a LOVE OF DEVOTION, Peter responded I really like you AS A FRIEND! Jesus asked again with the same results. Then the third time He asked, “Simon son of John, do you PHILEŌ me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked “Do you even PHILEŌ me?” (John 21:17)
How did this effect Peter’s ministry? Peter said, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His ABUNDANT MERCY has begotten us again to a LIVING HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and THAT DOES NOT FADE AWAY, reserved in heaven for you, WHO ARE KEPT BY THE POWER OF GOD through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:3-5)
