“1OPEN MY EYES to see wonderful things in your Word.” (Psa. 119:18) 1apokalupto: to remove the cover. This is a simple but powerful prayer for spiritual illumination, asking God by His Spirit to remove the cover or scales from our natural, spiritually blind eyes, that we might SEE AND RECEIVE SUPERNATURAL TRUTH. Spiritual truth cannot be apprehended in a natural way, but requires a supernatural means. “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love Him— these are the things God has REVEALED TO US BY HIS SPIRIT. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way NO ONE KNOWS THE THOUGHTS OF GOD EXCEPT THE SPIRIT OF GOD. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may UNDERSTAND WHAT GOD HAS FREELY GIVEN US.” (1 Corin. 2:9-12) The Bible is filled with spiritual truth that can only be seen with an eye OPENED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD. We are literally asking God to remove “the cover from our eyes,” so, the idea is to remove that which is concealing something from us.
Remember Balaam? Balaam was an ungodly man that God used to make a point, when he got on his donkey to go on his way the donkey just stopped in his tracks because, “…the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road.” This happened two more times and the donkey just laid down and as Balaam was beating him, “Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” (Num. 22:23, 27-28) So, as the donkey was explaining to Balaam what happened, “…the LORD OPENED BALAAM’S EYES, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.” (Num. 22:31)
Opened eyes is what we need as we’re searching for an answer from the Lord, “…the mystery (that God came in flesh) which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been REVEALED TO HIS SAINTS.” (Col. 1:26)
