Because of these things THE WRATH OF GOD IS COMING UPON THE SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE, in which YOU YOURSELVES ONCE WALKED WHEN YOU LIVED IN THEM. But now put off: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language. Do not lie, SINCE YOU HAVE PUT OFF THE OLD MAN WITH HIS DEEDS, and have PUT ON THE NEW MAN WHO IS RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE ACCORDING TO THE IMAGE OF HIM WHO CREATED YOU…” (Col. 3:4-10)
The whole passage forms a complete and magnificent picture of our spiritual life in Christ—the means of its beginning, the signs of its presence, and the hope of its completion. We are given the power to do this by sanctification, this is the “putting off” the old man and “putting on” the new (sanctified) man, sanctified by the blood of Jesus. When we are sanctified we have the power to turn away from sin, but we must use that power to be set free. In other words, it must be “our will” to live a sanctified life.
An Important matter is stated in verse 10 when the new man is renewed in “knowledge” the Greek word is “Epignosis:” detailed knowledge, precise and correct knowledge, the knowledge of things divine.
“Likewise you also, reckon (take into account) yourselves to be DEAD INDEED TO SIN, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore DO NOT LET SIN REIGN (rule) IN YOUR MORTAL BODY, that you should obey it in its lusts.” (Rom. 6:11-12)
